The Debate about Backlinks and Traffic - Just Why is it Such a Big Deal?
Nowadays if we want to have a successful website, we need to work with unique content, search engine optimization, niche markets and tremendous competition. And that list is merely the beginning. We will probably also need to study marketing and copywriting and how to turn our visitors into buyers. But, for most webmasters, the number one problem is bringing in traffic.
And that brings us to the subject of this article. What do I need to do to attract Internet surfers to my website? Well, one answer to that question is backlinks! So, exactly what are backlinks and exactly what do they have to do with getting visitors to my website?
The first thing to realize is that there are basically two forms of traffic, paid traffic and organic traffic. Examples of paid traffic are such things as advertising with pay per click networks, banners on other peoples' websites and any other way in which you can pay to get a web surfer's attention and tempt him to visit your website. If you're only focused on paid traffic then you don't need to worry too much about backlinks.
Organic traffic comes from somebody searching on a search engine for a subject that they are interested in. When the free listings are displayed the surfer then clicks on one of the websites listed to visit the appropriate webpage. When it comes to organic traffic the webmaster does not have to pay directly for the link that the surfer clicks on.
Frequently, organic traffic is said to be free traffic. Though it can be, it frequently is not exactly free. To get a website page listed on the first couple of pages of search engine results the webmaster has to do quite a lot of work. This brings us once more to backlinks.
Normally, the number and quality of backlinks attached to a website are what determines sites that are listed when we do a search. A backlink is defined as nothing more than a hyperlink from one website to another website. So it is very helpful if you have a whole lot of websites linking to your website if you want to have your pages ranked well in the organic search engine results.
But do not forget that quality also matters. A backlink can be considered to be of high quality if:
* The words forming the hyperlink (known as the 'anchor' text) are highly relevant to the topic of the web page that the link is leading to. (You should not use "click here"!)
* The page rank of the website linking to you is fairly high (say a PR3 or higher) and here it is a case of the higher the better.
* The website linking to yours has a lot of good quality backlinks pointing to it.
* The topic on the website where the backlink originates is related to the topic on your website.
There are several other criteria, but those shown here are a very good starting point.
So, exactly how does a webmaster go about creating a quantity of high quality backlinks pointing to his website? There are dozens of ways and even more software programs that are designed to provide the answer. Purchasing the software adds some cost to your backlinks.
The only really free method is to wait for other webmasters to discover your website and think enugh of it to link to you. That is all well and good, but can take a long time. Of course you can contact other webmasters and ask if they would like to trade links with you. You provide them with a link from your website and they give you one from their website in return. These are however called reciprocal links and are of questionable value today.
Another method is to use Article Marketing which initially involves writing articles on topics that are relevant to your website. You then submit your articles to several article directory sites and include links of your own choice in the resources box which is attached at the bottom of your content. Submitting your website to a number of website directories is yet another method that fits into the free category.
You may also decide to pay for backlinks. One of the simplest ways is to buy links directly. The Internet marketing forums are a great place to find links on offer. You might have to pay $50 a month or more to put your link on a PR5 site. You'll probably get a lot of juice out of it, but you will have to pay for it. Naturally the lower the page rank is then the lower the cost will be.
No matter which technique you select, acquiring backlinks is vital to your success in ranking in the search engines. You will want to acquire hundreds or if possible thousands of them. What's important is that you get going and build your links up over the weeks ahead so that you can begin to enjoy a continuous flow of traffic to your website.
