Customers find Google Website Optimizer to be an important tool in their quest to improve their conversion rates. The product shows multiple combinations of a page to different site visitors and then measures which of those visitors take actions. Multivariate and split testing are far superior strategies to showing different pages over time, the company believes, because they eliminate the economic and seasonal changes to the site that skew the testing.
On the LunaMetrics website, the company compares multivariate testing -- the more sophisticated type of testing that Google Website Optimizer handles -- to playing the famous board game, Clue (R). To win Clue, you must determine the villain from a cast of characters (Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, and the rest); choose the correct weapon from a pre-determined set of weapons (the candlestick, the rope and so on); and select the correct room (the conservatory, library, hall, and so on). There are six suspects, six possible weapons, and nine rooms, resulting in 324 combinations. Multivariate testing works the same way: users substitute a headline, a picture, and perhaps a block of copy for those elements being tested. Google Website Optimizer then serves random combinations of all the variations created for each element in the test, until enough combinations have been shown for a statistically significant "winner" to be declared.
